Energy saving with IE2 compliant motors

Obsolete electric motors result in higher energy consumption.

1998 a voluntary agreement was introduced by the European Committee of Manufacturers of Electrical Machines and Power Electronics (CEMEP) and the European Commission.

The following efficiency classes were defined:

  • EFF3 = Standard Motor
  • EFF2 = Improved Efficiency Motor
  • EFF1 = High Efficiency Motor

In 2009 a new, worldwide standard (EN 60034-30:2009) for efficiency classes was introduced.

Protect the environment and safe operating expenses?

This is the intention of the new EN 60034-30:2009 standard and the implementation of EU-wide Requirements for Energy Using Products (EuP). The standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) replaced existing national, varying regulations and lead to internationally consistent efficiency factors and classes for low-voltage three-phase motors.

Since 16th June 2011 only high efficiency motors IE2 (IE = International Efficiency) can be sold according to the European Union's Ecodesign Directive.

The new EN 60034-30:2009 defines worldwide the following efficiency classes of low-voltage three-phase asynchronous motors in the power range from 0.75 kW to 375 kW:

  • IE1 = Standard Efficiency (comparable to EFF2)
  • IE2 = High Efficiency (comparable to EFF1)
  • IE3 = Premium Efficiency
